| Current Project/Show? | | Freelancing to venues in Sydney including Enmore, Metro and Factory theatres as audio/LX op. Also working on a video project about coffee, teaching vision, and writing regularly for CX magazine. | | | How long have you been working in the events industry? | | First paid gig in 1996, so thirteen years. | | | What was your first paid job in the events industry? | | Lighting guy who was hired to do audio. | | | What is your worst ever gig, and why? | | Surprisingly enough it was a wedding. Drunken punters and running out of Abba is not a good combination. | | | What is your best ever gig, and why? | | Mixing Doug Parkinson at Manly Jazz. He brought a swag of very good musos along, it was a beautiful day outside and the crowd really got into it. Great vibe and definitely one of the most memorable gigs. More recently doing monitors for Architecture in Helsinki at Enmore - they are "hectic as" on stage but heaps of fun. | | | What is your least favourite thing about working as an event technician? | | Chasing payment for invoices. "We haven't been paid for the gig" is and has always been an inadequate justification for delaying payment to someone *you've* contracted. | | | What is your favourite thing about working as an event technician? | | The people I get to work with. I get to play with some really cool toys too! | | | What do you enjoy doing outside of work? | | I enjoy sleeping. When I'm not doing that I'll be on my bike somewhere or having coffee with mates. Reading is good too. | | | What do you do to get through the boring times of being an event tech? i.e. Waiting 3 hours for the tour truck to arrive.. | | A colleague and I once wrote and recorded a song during 2 hours downtime. | | | What job would you have if you were not an event tech? | | Do I have to like the job? | | | What technology could you not live without? | | Macbook Pro, iPhone, and internet. Wouldn't know where I was without them or how to get there. | | | Funniest thing ever seen on tour? | | Lost count. | | | Scariest thing ever seen on tour? | | Again I've lost count, although the "listen to how loud my PA can go" guy scared me a bit (and continues to). | | | Any advice for the younger generation techs? | | Lots, but I'll keep it short: Anyone who knows more about something than you do is someone worth listening to. Learn from the experiences of others whenever you can. | |
